I was driving cross country in 2004 and Texas happened to be one of the states I had to pass through. I dropped by the Fort Worth/Dallas region partly due to a business-related reason as well. I did not have a high expectation for find anything terribly interesting in the area but I was pleasantly surprised! Forth Worth’s reputation as “the museum capital of the Southwest” is definitely well deserved! Many of the museums are indeed of world-class quality. I did not get to visit all of the museums but in the end, I was most impressed by the Modern Art Museum. The museum, the building and its surrounding, was work of art in itself. It was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The way the building was reflected in the pond was absolutely gorgeous. The pond and the reflection gave the whole environment a sense of tranquility that I could not find in other more “famous” and “bigger collection” museums across the country. However, the collections inside the museum also exceeded my expectation. When you walk in, heading toward the permanent collections, you are immediatley greeted by Anselm Kiefer’s Book with Wings (1992–94). You can even walk up to that that book, made of steel, up and personal. The rest of the museum also gives you that same very personal feeling. And every art collection is of very high quality and leaves you pondering, making the whole experience very pleasant. It is highly recommended!
